How do I set the page up?
You do all of this at home, in your own time. Nothing happens at the memorial until you are ready.
- Scan the plaque with your phone camera. A web page opens. There is no app to download.
- Create a free account. The page is yours, so only you can change it.
- Add a photo, their name and their dates. That is enough to start with.
- Add more whenever you want. Photographs, video, voice recordings, stories, a timeline of their life.
- Choose who can see it. Anyone who scans it, or only the people you let in.
- Stick the plaque on when you are happy with the page. Peel off the backing and press it on. It takes a minute.
Family and friends can send you photographs and memories too. Nothing they send appears until you approve it.
Come back and add more in a month, or in ten years. Only you need an account.
What is included?
One price covers both halves: the plaque you fix to the memorial, and the memory page behind it. There is nothing further to buy and no subscription.
- The memory page, private or open as you choose, yours to add to for as long as you like
- The plaque, 80mm square in brushed steel or brushed black, with the weatherproof backing already applied
- Space on the page for 1,000 photographs, 30 minutes of video and 30 minutes of voice
- The page included, with no subscription and no renewal fee
- A lifetime guarantee on the plaque itself, explained below
- Fitting instructions, and a card explaining how to set the page up before you fix the plaque on
What can I fix it to?
The plaque fixes to almost anything a family chooses as a memorial, not just a headstone.
- Headstones and memorial stones, in granite, marble or any other material
- Benches, whether a memorial bench in a park or garden or one at home
- Urns, keepsake boxes and cremation memorials, for ashes kept rather than buried
- Trees, plaques and garden memorials, anywhere a family already goes to remember someone
The backing is weatherproof and suited to permanent outdoor use, and the same plaque works just as well indoors. If you are fixing it somewhere public, check with whoever looks after the site first. See delivery and returns below for what happens if permission is not given.
What does the lifetime guarantee cover?
If the plaque ever fades, rusts, corrodes or lifts off the memorial, tell us and we will send a replacement free of charge, linked to the same memory page. There is no time limit and no proof of purchase needed beyond your order number.
It covers the plaque failing in normal outdoor use. It does not cover a plaque that has been painted over, prised off deliberately, or damaged by someone else, though if that happens tell us anyway and we will do what we can.
One thing we will say plainly. A guarantee is only ever as good as the business behind it, and no company can guarantee it will always be trading. We would rather say that here than leave it in the small print. What does not depend on us is what you have built: you can download a complete copy of everything on the page at any time, and if we ever did close, every family would get at least 90 days' notice and a full copy first.
Will the page still be there in 50 years?
There is no subscription and no renewal fee. You pay once. Not you later, and not whoever inherits it. No page goes offline because a bill went unpaid, because there is no bill.
A page that depends on someone remembering to pay for it is a page that eventually disappears. Renewals get missed. Cards get replaced. The person who set it up is not always the person who is still here. Paying once takes that out of the future entirely.
Nothing on the page is only ours. From the day you start it you can download everything on it whenever you want, as ordinary photograph and video files on your own computer. You never need our permission to have your own photographs.
The page is included for as long as The Life Behind is trading. No company can guarantee it will always be trading, and we would rather say that plainly than leave it in the small print. If we ever did close, every family would get at least 90 days' notice by email and a full copy of everything before the page came offline. It is set out in our terms of service.
Who can see the page?
That is your choice, and you can change it whenever you like. The preview further down this page lets you see both.
Open. Anyone who scans the plaque sees the whole page. No account, no sign in, nothing to download.
Private. Anyone who scans sees a front page with a portrait, the name and dates, and a few lines. To see the photographs, video, voice recordings and stories, a visitor requests access. You see who has requested it, and you decide whether to let them in.
Either way the page is never listed anywhere and never appears in search results. Anything sent in by other people comes to you first.
When will it arrive, and what if I change my mind?
Free UK delivery on every order. Dispatched within one business day, arriving in 3 to 5 business days. The date shown above is the day it should have arrived by at the latest.
If it is not right, you have 60 days to send it back for a full refund, as long as the backing is still sealed and the plaque has not been fitted. That is on top of your legal right to cancel within 14 days. Return postage is paid by you, unless the plaque is faulty or not as described, in which case we cover it.
If you are putting the plaque somewhere public and permission turns out to be a problem, we refund you in full. There is more on our returns page, and other questions are answered in our FAQs.
Every stone gives a name.
Now you can add the life behind it.
How it works
All of it is done at home, in your own time. Nothing needs doing at the memorial until you are ready.
-
1
Scan it before you fix it
Point your phone camera at the plaque and a web page opens. There is no app to download. Link it to a new memory page, or to one you have already made.
-
2
Fill it with their life
Photographs, video, voice recordings, a timeline, and the stories only your family knows.
-
3
Choose who sees it
Open to anyone who scans, or private, with a front page for visitors and the rest for the people you let in.
-
4
Fix it to the memorial
Peel and press, once you are happy with the page. It takes a minute and holds in any weather.
Come back and add to it in a month, or in ten years. Only you need an account.
Have a look at what a page can hold
The page comes with the plaque, for one price, with no subscription. No app, and nothing to download. It opens on the phone already in your hand, and you decide how much of it a visitor can see.
Whitfield
Margaret was born in Kilkenny in the spring of 1941, the third of five, and she carried that big-family noise with her everywhere she went. She trained as a nurse at St. Mary’s, met Tom at a dance he claims he was dragged to, and married him eleven months later.
For thirty-two years she ran the paediatric ward night shift, and for sixty she ran a kitchen where nobody was allowed to leave hungry. She kept a notebook of everyone’s birthdays. She never once forgot one.
She is survived by Tom, her three children, nine grandchildren, and a rose bush that still blooms every June by the back door.
The rest of this page is private
The photographs, video, voice recordings and stories are kept for family and friends. Request access, and the family decide.
Request AccessTap either one to see what a visitor gets.
Everything you can put on the page
There is so much worth holding on to.
- Photos
- Voice recordings
- The order of service
- A timeline of their life
- Places they loved, and pets
- Stories from the whole family
- Video
- Their handwriting
- Visitor guestbook
- Recipes in their own words
- The sayings they always said
- Their favourite song, film, meal
Add a little at a time, whenever you are ready. Nothing has to be finished.
Whoever you are remembering
It does not have to be a recent loss, it does not have to be a grave, and you do not have to be next of kin.
Someone you have just lost
Take your time. Add the photographs you love most whenever you feel ready, for everyone to enjoy.
A grave that has been there for years
Nothing about the memorial changes. The plaque fits to what is already there.
Ashes kept at home
It fits an urn, a picture frame or a keepsake box just as well as a headstone.
A bench, a tree or a garden
A spot they loved, or one your family chose together. It fixes to wood and stone just as well.
It grows for as long as people keep adding
On birthdays. On anniversaries. On the ordinary Tuesday when you would give anything to hear that voice again.
You add what you have, and others send in photographs and stories you may never have seen.
Birthdays, anniversaries, a new grandchild born into the family.
Someone who was too young to remember hears that voice for the first time.
Someone tracing the family tree stands at the memorial and finds a whole life waiting.
Looking after it for the long term
There is no subscription and no renewal fee. You pay once. Not you later, and not whoever inherits it. No page goes offline because a bill went unpaid, because there is no bill.

And nothing on the page is only ours. From the day you start it you can download everything on it whenever you want, as ordinary photograph and video files on your own computer. You never need our permission to have your own photographs.
If we ever stopped trading, every family would get at least 90 days' notice and a full copy of everything first. It is set out in our terms of service.
Two friends from Lancashire
We are two friends who, between us, have lost more people than we expected to by this point in our lives.
What we kept noticing was how much goes missing. The photographs end up scattered across phones and lofts, mostly with nobody left to say who is in them. So we built the thing we wanted for ourselves, and made it something you pay for once rather than something that quietly disappears when a yearly bill goes unpaid.
If you are unsure whether this is right for your situation, email us and one of us will answer. We would rather talk it through than have you guess.
Let their story live on
The plaque and the memory page together, paid for once, and yours to add to for as long as you like.
