This is the question we are asked most, and it is the right one to ask anyone selling something meant to outlast them.

There is no subscription and no renewal fee. You pay once. Not you later, and not whoever inherits it. No page goes offline because a bill went unpaid, because there is no bill.

A page that depends on someone remembering to pay for it is a page that eventually disappears. Renewals get missed. Cards get replaced. The person who set it up is not always the person who is still here. Paying once takes that out of the future entirely.

Nothing on the page is only ours. From the day you start it you can download everything on it whenever you want, as ordinary photograph and video files on your own computer. You never need our permission to have your own photographs.

The page is included for as long as The Life Behind is trading. No company can guarantee it will always be trading, and we would rather say that plainly than leave it in the small print. If we ever did close, every family would get at least 90 days' notice by email and a full copy of everything before the page came offline. It is set out in our terms of service.

QR codes are an open standard, not one company's technology, and phones have read them natively for years without an app. They are not something that can be switched off by anybody.

Behind the code is an ordinary page at an ordinary web address, so the page does not depend on the code to exist. And because you can download everything on it at any time, what you have built does not depend on either.

It is made for permanent outdoor use with weatherproof fixings. The code is engraved into the metal rather than printed on top of it, so there is no ink to fade.

Tell us and we will send a replacement free of charge, linked to the same memory page. There is no time limit, and you do not need a receipt, only your order number.

Nothing you have added is ever at risk, because none of it is stored on the plaque. The plaque is only a doorway to the page.

The plaque is 80mm square, about the size of a playing card. The code is etched into the metal in the same tone as the finish rather than printed in harsh black and white. From a few feet away it reads as a small metal plaque. You have to be close to see it is a code at all.

Yes. There is a working preview on the product page that you can scroll through on a phone, and you can switch it between open and private to see exactly what a visitor would get.

No. It works on a headstone, a memorial bench, an urn at home, a picture frame or a keepsake box. It does not have to be a recent loss, and you do not have to be next of kin.

Some churchyards, cemeteries and councils have rules about what can be fixed to a memorial. It is worth a quick call to whoever looks after the site before you order. If they say no, tell us and we will refund you in full.

Honestly, yes. You could buy a printed sticker, point it at a folder of photographs and stick it on. Some people do, and there is nothing wrong with it.

What you would be taking on is the part that matters later. A printed code fades in a couple of British winters. A free folder disappears when an account lapses or a password is forgotten. And there is nobody to ask when it stops working in nine years' time.

Yes. One price covers both halves: the plaque and the memory page behind it. They are one purchase, not a plaque with an optional extra. There is nothing further to buy and no subscription.

Voice recordings, photographs, video, a life timeline, written stories, favourites, the sayings everyone still repeats, recipes, handwriting, the order of service, and a guestbook. Fill in as much or as little as you like, and come back to it years later.

Every page includes room for 1,000 photographs, 30 minutes of video and 30 minutes of voice.

Others in this trade say unlimited. We would rather give you the real figure and stand behind it, because unlimited storage has to be paid for by somebody, and usually that turns out to be a subscription later on.

A thousand photographs is more than most people have of one person, and half an hour of a voice is a great deal of a voice. If you do find yourself short, email us and we will sort out extra space for a small one-off fee. Nothing already added is ever taken away.

The plaque arrives with a card asking you to scan it before you fix it anywhere. Your phone camera opens it and asks you to create a free account, or sign in if you already have one. From there you link the plaque to a page you have already made, or start a new one, and build it in your own time. Fix it to the memorial once the page is ready.

No. Any phone camera opens the page and there is nothing to download.

That depends on the setting you choose. If your page is open, a visitor needs nothing at all. If it is private, they see a front page and ask to see the rest, which takes a couple of minutes and an email address.

If you can send a photograph in a text message you can do this, and you do it sitting at home rather than at the graveside. If you would rather not do it at all, send us what you have and we will build the page for you. Just ask.

Sign in with the same account when you scan the second plaque. You can link it to a page you have already made, so both plaques open the same memory page, or start a fresh one for someone else. Every page sits under the one account.

That is entirely your choice, and you can change it whenever you like.

Open. Anyone who scans the plaque sees the whole page. No account, no sign in, nothing to download.

Private. Anyone who scans sees a front page with a portrait, the name and dates, and a few lines, and no more. To see the photographs, video, voice recordings and stories, a visitor asks. You can see who is asking, and you decide.

Either way the page is never listed anywhere and never appears in search results.

Yes, and this is where most pages grow. If the page is open, anyone who scans it can send a photograph, a video or a memory. If it is private, only the people you have let in can.

Either way, nothing appears straight away. It comes to you first, and you decide what goes on. The page stays yours.

No, and there never will be. Nothing sits beside your photographs except your photographs.

Free UK delivery. Orders are dispatched within one working day and arrive within three to five working days. Full detail is on our shipping page.

You have 60 days to send it back for a full refund, as long as the backing is still sealed and the plaque has not been fitted. That is on top of your legal right to cancel within 14 days.

If you are sending it back because you changed your mind, return postage is yours to cover. If the plaque is faulty, damaged in transit or not as described, we cover it and we replace the plaque free.

Once the backing has been peeled and the plaque fixed to a memorial it cannot be returned. Full detail is on our returns page.
