Who we are
The Life Behind is a UK business selling memorial QR code plaques and the memory pages that go with them.

Orders and pricing
Prices are in pounds sterling. We are not currently VAT registered, so no VAT is charged and none is shown separately on your order.
We may correct obvious pricing errors before dispatch, and we will contact you if that happens rather than quietly cancelling.
The memory page
Each plaque comes with a memory page. You pay once at the point of purchase. There is no subscription and no renewal fee.
You keep ownership of everything you upload, and you can download a complete copy at any time in ordinary photo and video files.
You are responsible for what you upload, and you confirm you have the right to upload it. We may remove content that is unlawful or that infringes someone else's rights, and we may suspend a page while a complaint is looked at. We do not otherwise moderate what is on a memory page.
What happens to a page if the account holder dies
This will happen, so we would rather set it out plainly than leave it unsaid.
The page itself does not depend on anyone logging in. The hosting is included in the price already paid. If nobody ever signs in again, the page stays exactly as it is and keeps working for anyone who scans the plaque. Nothing is deleted for inactivity.
What is lost without an account holder is control: adding to the page, approving what other people send, and answering requests to view a private page.
Naming a second keeper. Any account holder can name one other person as a keeper, at any time, at no cost. If the account holder dies, that person can take over the page. This is the simplest way to deal with it, and it is decided while it can still be discussed.
If nobody was named. Next of kin can ask us to transfer the page. We will need a death certificate and reasonable proof of relationship. We do not hand over an account on an email request alone.
If the family does not agree. We will not choose between relatives. Where there is a genuine dispute we freeze the page: it stays online and visible exactly as it is, and nobody can change it until the family tells us together who should hold it.
We will not change a page's privacy setting because someone has died. If a page was set to private, it stays private. That was a decision the owner made deliberately, and it is not ours to reverse.
What is included, and storage limits
Each memory page includes room for 1,000 photographs, 30 minutes of video and 30 minutes of audio.
Reaching the allowance does not delete anything already uploaded and does not take the page offline. If you need more space for video or audio, contact us and we will arrange it for a one-off payment, with no recurring fee.
Accounts
You create a free account to build and manage a page. Visitors do not need an account to view an open page. Keep your login details safe.
Hosting commitment
Hosting for the memory page is included in the price of the plaque for as long as The Life Behind is trading, with no renewal fee and nothing further to pay. There is no fixed cut-off date.
Your own downloadable copy is not dependent on us at all: you can download everything on the page at any time, in ordinary photo and video files.
What happens if we close
No company can guarantee it will always be trading, and we would rather set out plainly what happens if The Life Behind ever stops than leave it unsaid.
Advance notice. If we decide to close or are unable to continue hosting pages, we will email every account holder at least 90 days before pages are taken offline, using the email address on the account.
A full export, free of charge. During that notice period we will make available a complete download of every memory page, in ordinary photo, video and audio files, at no cost. This is the same download already available to you at any time, so if you have already made a copy you do not need to do anything further.
An attempt to hand pages on. Where practical, we will try to arrange for an alternative provider to take over hosting of existing pages, so that plaques already fixed to a memorial keep working. We cannot guarantee this will always be possible, which is why the export above does not depend on it.
What happens to your data afterwards. Once the notice period has ended and pages have come offline, we delete the personal data we hold, including page content, account details and anything sent in by other people, except where we are required by law to keep records for longer, such as transaction records for tax purposes. We do not sell it, transfer it to anyone else without telling you, or keep it for any other purpose.
Your copy does not depend on us. A family holding their own download holds ordinary photograph, video and audio files. Those can be kept, shared or published wherever the family chooses, with no involvement from us and no reliance on this website.
The plaque guarantee
If a plaque fades, rusts, corrodes or lifts off the memorial in normal outdoor use, we will replace it free of charge for as long as we are trading. It does not cover deliberate damage, painting over, or removal by a third party.
This guarantee is in addition to your rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 and does not affect them. A guarantee cannot outlast the business offering it, and we say so on the product page rather than only here. Your statutory rights are separate and stand on their own.
Fitting to a memorial
You are responsible for obtaining permission from whoever looks after the site before attaching anything to a memorial, including a cemetery, churchyard, local authority or landowner. If permission is refused we refund you in full. See our returns page.
Cancellation, returns and refunds
Set out in full on our returns page, which forms part of these terms. In short: 60 days to change your mind on an unused plaque, on top of your legal right to cancel within 14 days under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013, and your rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 if goods are faulty.
Engraved and personalised items are the exception to the 14 day cancellation right, because they are made to your specification, under Regulation 28 of those Regulations. That does not affect your rights if an item is faulty or not as described. The returns page includes a model cancellation form if you would like to use one.
Liability
Nothing in these terms limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot be limited by law. Your statutory rights as a consumer are not affected by anything written here.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and any dispute is subject to the courts of England and Wales.
